Volunteering is a wonderful way to give back to the community, gain valuable experience, and connect with individuals who share a passion for dogs. We invite you to join our team and make a difference. Whether you have a few hours a week or want to help out at events, there are ways for you to be involved with JLAD!
Become a Socializer
Our biggest volunteer need are socializers! As a socializer, you are an integral part of our organization. You will open your home to a JLAD dog, providing a solid foundation for them to grow into life-changing service dogs. When rotating from our prison training program, you will expose these dogs to various environments, including a workplace, if permissible, and care for the dog’s routine needs.
Socializer Responsibilities
- Supply the basic essentials, such as food, bowls, crate, bed, leash and toys.
- Provide routine needs, including feeding, grooming, exercise and socialization.
- Oversee two dogs, who are each on an alternating, 2-week rotation schedule from our prison training program.
- Drop-off and pick-up dogs during rotations at designated times and locations (Salem or Wilsonville).
- Attend weekly training classes at the JLAD facility in Salem.
- Attend various JLAD scheduled outings.
- Seek respite care for dogs with a JLAD-approved individual, when necessary.
- Be able to commit a minimum of two years.
